ABOUT
Mallow grew up in the swamps of Indatha, in a community of gnomes that built hidden burrows down in the muck and within the husks of dead trees. Living among nightmarish creatures and the reanimated dead, his clan never became the brutal warriors that Ikoria is known for. Instead, they became adept at living in secrecy. Always hidden. Always quiet. Always careful when they had to venture out into the swamps. Still, they were resilient and inventive and made the most of it. Their homes were comfortable, full of clever contraptions to make life easier or keep people entertained, and their community was tightly knit.

As a child, Mallow was the responsible older brother always herding younger siblings and cousins around and helping to maintain the burrow. As an adult, he became one of the community's scouts, groups of gatherers and lookouts that braved the swamp to collect supplies and keep an eye out for approaching dangers. It was frightening work. But it had to be done and he was good at it.

This role did force him to confront an ugly truth, though.

▶ Keep Reading...While his kin knew how to handle the dangers of the swamp and tragedies among them were relatively rare, those that traveled through were not so lucky. He saw them attacked by beasts, stalked by Nightmares, and (for the truly unfortunate) devoured by Nethroi. This quickly got to him and he began keeping an eye out for travelers, attempting to help them despite the insistence of his family that he could not look out for anyone but himself.

Unfortunately, his Good Samaritan act did eventually put him in harm's way. Fortunately(?), one of the travelers he aided was a vampire and turned him as a sign of gratitude shortly before he could die of his injuries. Since that time, life has become...a little complicated. Feeding on family and friends to sustain himself. Developing supernatural abilities and unexpected magical talents. Hearing the whispers of Nethroi grow louder as it spoke to the dead since he was now one of them. Headaches all around!

The letter from Strixhaven was an unexpected relief and he left home, set on figuring things out. These people can probably cure vampirism, right? Or at least help him put his new abilities to good use?

Mallow is a small man even for a gnome, standing at just 3'2", and has a thin, angular build. His eyes are uncommonly pale, his canines are uncommonly long and sharp, his skin is ashen (particularly when he hasn't fed) and cold to the touch, and he tends to just... look a bit ill. All the typical undead stuff! His clothing is practical, muted in color, and slightly oversized and he typically carries around a dark jacket with a hood that makes him all but invisible in the dark. You know. Just in case!

cantrip magic Mallow's casting is subtle, marked only by soft whispering and intricate patterns of black lines that appear on his fingertips and crawl their way up his hands like creeping vines until the spell is complete. His cantrips tend to be harmless but helpful. He can create orbs of magical light (resembling will-o'-wisps) or cause objects to glow, create vivid illusory sounds, change the shape/size/opacity of shadows in his proximity, and imbue a creature with minor resistance to damage through touch. He can also cause a plant to bloom or a seed to sprout, but only at night.
spell list Cure Wounds: Heal moderate damage to one creature.

Entangle: Cause a bloom of grasping vines to grow underneath one creature, restraining them and making the terrain around them difficult terrain.

Sleep: Cause creatures within a 20 foot radius of you to fall unconscious.
talents Stealth: In Indatha, getting around quickly and quietly was a necessity and Mallow became quite adept at both. He's good at going unnoticed, hiding in the shadows or anything else that might be available, and getting into places he shouldn't be. He's observant of what's going on around him and accustomed to communicating silently, whether by reading lips or through systems of hand gestures. When he does get caught, he's quick on his feet and better than most at scrambling away to safety.

Survival: Mallow is accustomed to surviving in dangerous natural environments. He's good at things like finding fresh water, knowing which plants are safe to consume/can be used in potions, tracking creatures, climbing, finding shelter, evading pursuit, and avoiding natural hazards like quicksand. He's a jack of all trades, master of none in this area and much of his knowledge is Indatha-specific, but he'll still do better in the wilderness than most people.

  • As a vampire, Mallow has several abilities outside of his magic. When not in direct sunlight or running water (both of which cause him discomfort or actual damage with prolonged exposure), he can transform into mist or into a tiny bat. He can also regenerate from just about any injury given enough time, climb effortlessly on walls or ceilings, and summon creatures (typically bats or rats) to his aid. His fangs can deliver a pretty nasty bite too. Supposedly, vampires can charm people into obeying their commands, but he hasn't got the nerve or the impulse to try that.

  • Like most gnomes, Mallow has a frankly ridiculous number of names from his family and community back home. These include plays on his name like Mal, Mallowmoon, Mallow of the Marsh, and (of course) Marshmallow. His less direct names include but are not limited to: Shadeveil, Flit, Pon, Mooneyes, Chary, Dal, Echocall, Sable, and Wim.

  • Mallow dislikes necromancy and any magical forces that corrupt nature. Like, a lot. The irony of this is not lost on him but it doesn't change how he feels. He sees his home as a place that needs to be purged of dark forces, restored, and protected. On his off days, he sees himself as unnatural and has a lot of feelings about whether or not he should still be here. But it's Fine.

  • Mallow is...very quiet. His typical speaking voice is almost a whisper and he's prone to mumbling. He even moves around quietly. It's all a matter of habit and he's not certain what to make of his boisterous peers. Seems dangerous to him, ya'll.
